Visas for Taiwan
Digital Nomad Visitor Visa
Visa overview
Taiwan offers a Digital Nomad Visitor Visa for eligible nationals of visa-exempt countries, allowing them to live and work remotely in Taiwan for up to six months, renewable up to a total stay of two years. Taiwan is attractive for its healthcare, infrastructure, food, and safety, particularly for working nomads. Taiwan does not offer a broad retirement visa equivalent to Thailand's.
Who it may suit
Remote workers from visa-exempt countries who want a high-quality, safe, well-connected base in East Asia and can meet the income threshold published by BOCA.
Eligibility
Open to nationals of visa-exempt countries who meet the income and documentation requirements published by the Bureau of Consular Affairs. An interview may be required. Verify the latest thresholds directly with BOCA before applying.
Required documents
1) Passport valid for the intended stay. 2) Proof of income meeting the BOCA threshold. 3) Evidence of remote work / employment. 4) Application form and fee. 5) Any documents BOCA requests, which may include an interview.

Verify current threshold with the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA)
Stay length
Up to 6 months initially, renewable up to a total stay of 2 years.
Extensions
Renewable in increments up to a total stay of 2 years, subject to BOCA approval.
Remote work rules
The Digital Nomad Visitor Visa authorizes remote work for foreign employers and clients. It is not a work permit for the local Taiwanese labor market — local employment requires a separate work permit.
Local employment rules
Not authorized for local employment
Tax residency warning
Staying 183+ days in a tax year can make you a Taiwanese tax resident. The US-Taiwan tax relationship has no comprehensive double-taxation treaty, so plan carefully. This is not tax advice — consult a qualified tax professional.
Application process
1) Confirm your country is visa-exempt and review current requirements on the BOCA page. 2) Prepare income and remote-work documentation. 3) Apply through a Taiwan overseas mission or BOCA. 4) Attend an interview if requested. 5) Receive the visa for up to 6 months, renewable up to 2 years.
