Indonesia Immigration (Bali)
Official portal for Indonesian e-visas and immigration services. Remote-worker and longer-stay pathways (e.g. Second Home-style) may suit location-independent professionals and financially independent retirees.
Quick take: Strong lifestyle appeal, but investigate Indonesian immigration status carefully — Bali does not have its own separate visa system.
Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Visa Information
Japan's Digital Nomad visa allows eligible remote workers to stay up to 6 months; MoFA states extensions are not granted under this category. No simple dedicated retirement visa exists.
Quick take: Excellent infrastructure and safety; comparatively less straightforward for traditional retirement migration.
Malaysia Immigration Department
Official immigration portal. The DE Rantau Nomad Pass is Malaysia's specialized nomad-focused pathway — verify current professional and income requirements before applying.
Quick take: One of the strongest combinations of affordability, infrastructure, English accessibility, and long-stay programs.
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H)
MM2H offers eligible foreigners a renewable social visit pass with multiple-entry privileges — a key retiree/long-stay option.
Pair with the DE Rantau Nomad Pass for remote workers.
Philippines Bureau of Immigration
Official immigration portal. The Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV) is a major retirement-oriented option; remote workers should distinguish tourist status from authorized work/residence status.
Quick take: English-friendly and culturally accessible for many Americans; one of Asia's best-known retirement destinations.
Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority
Singapore is primarily a work-pass and employment-based immigration environment, not a dedicated digital-nomad destination. No straightforward general-purpose retirement visa; long-term residence usually depends on family, employment, investment, or PR routes.
Quick take: Outstanding infrastructure and stability — but expensive and comparatively difficult for lifestyle-only migration.
Korea Immigration Service – Digital Nomad Visa
South Korea's Digital Nomad (Workation) Visa was developed for qualifying overseas remote workers. Rules have evolved — verify the latest income and stay requirements directly with Korean immigration.
Quick take: Excellent for urban nomads and remote professionals; less simple for traditional retirement migration.
Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs – Digital Nomad Visa
Taiwan offers a Digital Nomad Visitor Visa for eligible nationals from visa-exempt countries, with current requirements published by the Bureau of Consular Affairs. No broad retirement visa equivalent to Thailand's.
Quick take: Great healthcare, infrastructure, food, and safety; particularly attractive to working nomads.
Thailand Embassy – Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
The DTV is designed for workcation activity, including digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and foreign talent.
Quick take: One of the strongest all-around choices for both nomads and retirees.
Thailand Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O / O-A / O-X)
Thailand offers multiple retirement-oriented categories, including Non-Immigrant O, O-A, and O-X pathways.
Pair with the DTV for remote workers; one of the strongest retirement migration options in Asia.
Vietnam Immigration E-Visa Portal
Official e-visa portal. Vietnam has no dedicated digital-nomad visa like Thailand or Taiwan; an e-visa can be valid for up to 90 days depending on issuance. No simple widely available retirement visa; long-term residence requires another legal basis.
Quick take: Exceptional affordability and energy for nomads — but long-term legal residence requires more planning.
U.S. Department of State – Renew or Replace a Passport
U.S. citizens should renew passports before or during international migration planning. Eligible citizens may renew online for routine service; others may renew by mail or apply in person. Living abroad changes procedures — contact the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate.
Quick take: Maintain substantial passport validity before international moves — many destinations require significant validity remaining for entry or visa processing.
Viettel (Primary Carrier)
Vietnam's largest carrier. Target: eSIM with Vietnamese +84 number, 150–200+ GB/month, 5G, SMS & voice included. Budget: 150,000–300,000 VND/month. Verify hotspot/tethering is allowed before purchase.
Ask for a prepaid or postpaid eSIM plan with 150–200+ GB/month and 5G access. Confirm hotspot/tethering is permitted on the plan before buying. Avoid travel eSIMs as a primary line.
MobiFone (Backup Carrier)
Backup carrier if Viettel coverage is insufficient. Also offers eSIM with data, 5G, SMS and voice plans.
Use as a secondary/backup line. Confirm eSIM availability and data allowance (150–200+ GB/month) at point of purchase.
