There is something I have come to appreciate about the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City.

As a Westerner living in Vietnam, I can usually tell when the rain is coming. The sky darkens, the wind picks up, and suddenly a cool breeze moves through the city. After spending hours in the heat, that first cool gust feels incredible. For a few minutes, everything seems to slow down.

Then the rain arrives.

When the rain finally stops, the temperature often feels noticeably cooler. The streets are wet, the air feels refreshed, and the city takes on a completely different atmosphere. It is one of my favorite parts of living in Vietnam.

But there is one part I could definitely do without—the heat and humidity after the rain. That combination can make the air feel heavy again, almost as if the rain never happened.

Still, those few minutes of cool air before the storm and the refreshing temperature afterward are small things that make life in Ho Chi Minh City interesting. Living in Vietnam has taught me to appreciate weather differently. Sometimes, the best part of the day is simply standing by the window, feeling that first cool breeze, and knowing the rain is on its way.
